Vandrarhem Garvaren

A unique overnight stay in the heart of the old wooden town Eksjö

A warm welcome

About this beautiful place

This unique property in the heart of the old wooden town Eksjö has been declared a monument. The Garvaren building dates from 1831 and the building has place for both guests and a lot of history. Here you will stay in rooms with toilet and shower, often next or nearby to the rooms and use of the communal kitchen.

Eksjöån (stream) flows past the building and old wooden buildings and cobbled streets surround the hostel. The hostel is located next to the Tourist Centre and you have shops, restaurants, museums, a swimming lake with fishing opportunities within walking distance. There are also wonderful guided city walks through the city or long-distance walks outside the city. There are also plenty of activities in Eksjö, including the yearly town festival and the atmospheric Christmas market.

History

The old tannery

This building was built in 1831 to be used as a tannery. Here was the leather factory of Felix Aschan. In Eksjö there were several tanneries in the 19th century, including Forssellskagården and Krusagården.

The tanneries were often large and built round. The work with the hides required large spaces and it was a great advantage to have the water of Eksjöån nearby.
