The old tannery
At the end of the 19th century, Felix Aschan's son, Georg Aschan, took over the factory. He expanded it in the year 1900 by building the large brick building next to it. During the 20th century it all turned around; new production methods and the increase of imports of leather increased and it was difficult for the Aschans to keep up with the rapid developments during that time. Therefore, they sold the company in 1928 to a larger company that eventually closed the business. Three generations of Aschan had then led the company: Felix, Georg and Albert Aschan. After the factory was closed in 1928 a clothing company Kaboms took over and began to run a textile factory here. The company started started in 1947 and continued through the 1950s.
And finally, in the year 1968 the Eksjö museum and the Tourist Centre moved in. At the moment the hostel also opens to tourists. Tourism is now the new big industry!
If you would like to know more about the Aschan family, you can visit the museum called Aschanska garden in the center of Eksjö. Here you can join a guided tour and get a sense of what life in ancient Eksjö once was like. When the youngest of Aschans siblings, Hedda, died in the year 1984 at the rightful age of 101 years old, there were no heirs and the house was then taken over by a foundation. Most of the house has been remained untouched ever since. When you walk through the house, you get the feeling that someone from the Aschan family is about to come home!
This building was built in 1831 to be used as a tannery. Here was the leather factory of Felix Aschan. In Eksjö there were several tanneries in the 19th century, including Forssellskagården and Krusagården.
The tanneries were often large and built round. The work with the hides required large spaces and it was a great advantage to have the water of Eksjöån nearby.
